Eleanor Stringer

Eleanor has spent most of her life around the Wandle river. Her parents still live off North Road, her daughter is at school at the heart of the ward. She lives with her family near to All Saints Recreation Ground, and regularly volunteers her time to help to look after local parks and greenspaces. Having dedicated her professional career to using research to improve the lives of vulnerable people, she has applied this experience to her role in Merton’s Cabinet, ensuring that Merton’s services for children and families are the best they can be. She is so proud of our amazing local schools.

As Joint Deputy Leader, she’s worked closely with Mark to deliver real improvements for local residents – from making sure that the poorest children received meal vouchers and activities over the school holidays, to supporting businesses throughout the pandemic.

Councillor Mark Allison

Mark was born in St Helier and lives by Wandle Park. He has been active in the community for many years, and runs a foodbank service for vulnerable local families. Mark became Council Leader in 2020, and quickly ordered the biggest listening exercise in Merton’s history, Your Merton, to find out how the pandemic had changed residents’ priorities for the area.

Before that, Mark dealt with a £70m budget gap he inherited from the Conservatives, even finding enough money to build a new library in Colliers Wood and a new leisure centre in Morden. Mark is proudest though of helping to raise school standards – all Merton’s secondary schools are now Good or Outstanding – and to bring AFC Wimbledon, who he supports at most home games, back to Plough Lane
