The Tories crashed the economy, and they are going to make Merton’s schools pay the price. Our schools are facing higher costs for energy, as well as pay rises for teachers and support staff that – while hugely welcome – are completely unfunded. Alongside other rising costs, these mean that Merton schools are facing difficult financial choices. Last week, as the Leader of Merton Council, I wrote to the new SoS for Education – the fifth in four months – asking for HMG to provide the funding our schools need. I called for emergency funding to ensure that no schools are forced to make decisions that impact on children’s learning.
