What has Labour delivered in Merton?
Over the last few years, Labour-run Merton Council has been focused on delivering practical improvements that make a real difference to residents’ day-to-day lives.
Across the borough, that work is already visible.
We’ve planted 1,000 new street trees, helping to green our neighbourhoods and improve air quality. We’ve made it easier to keep Merton clean, with expanded pop-up recycling tips and more regular street cleaning.
We’ve also taken action to improve safety, with new Safer Streets teams out every week tackling anti-social behaviour and supporting local communities.
For families and residents of all ages, we’ve introduced free swimming for under 16s and over 65s, helping more people stay active and healthy. At the same time, we’ve continued to invest in our local infrastructure — resurfacing roads, delivering new crossings, and improving cycling provision with new lanes and bike hangars.
We’re also looking to the future. Labour in Merton has started building the first new council homes in a generation, helping to meet local housing need and support the next generation of residents.
Importantly, all of this has been delivered while maintaining strong financial management — keeping Council Tax significantly lower than neighbouring Lib Dem-run Kingston, where residents pay around £450 more on average.
Looking ahead
There is still more to do — but the progress made over the last few years provides a strong foundation to build on.
Continuing to deliver for residents will depend on maintaining that focus: investing in local areas, keeping costs down where possible, and ensuring that Merton remains a borough that works for everyone.
