Labour-run Merton Council is one of the first councils in the country to introduce a lane rental scheme, which gives us the power to charge utility companies like Thames Water and SGN a daily fee for every day they’re digging up our major roads.

Trials from elsewhere in the country show this can lead to a major reduction in roadworks, helping to keep traffic moving and reduce delays. A daily charge will apply for works taking place on our busiest roads at peak times, encouraging utility companies to pick quieter times and to complete works more quickly.

All money raised through the scheme will be reinvested in our road network, so not only will residents see reductions in traffic congestion as a result of roadworks, but this innovative new scheme will help to fund road and street improvements too.

Cllr Stuart Neaverson, Cabinet Member for Cleaner Streets and Transport said:

“Residents in Merton are rightfully fed up with utility companies endlessly digging up our roads, causing delays and clogging up our roads. That’s why I’m proud that Merton Labour are doing something about it. This new lane rental scheme will allow us to hold utility companies to account for every day they cause delays on our busiest roads. Trials from elsewhere in the country have been really promising, and we look forward to seeing the difference here in Merton.”

This is all part of Merton Labour’s plan to keep Merton moving and stand up for local residents.
