Following years of campaigning, Morden Tube station has been selected as part of a £3m Transport for London programme to increase toilet accessibility across the capital.
Over 8 million journeys each year begin or end at Morden Tube Station, however the station currently has no toilet facilities, sitting at the end of the longest “loo desert” in the entire tube network, where there are no toilets for 12 stops on the Northern Line all the way to Elephant and Castle.
Councillor Alambritis, Councillor Stringer, local groups like More Loos For Merton, and hundreds of residents have campaigned repeatedly for toilet facilities at the station over the years, and Transport for London’s (TfL) decision will boost local transport accessibility, comfort and hygiene across Merton and the capital.
The benefits of providing toilet facilities at Morden Station were recently outlined by Councillor Alambritis at a recent meeting with the Deputy Mayor for Transport, where he detailed how the provision of toilets at Morden Station would particularly support travellers and local residents with disabilities, older people, women and children, and the homeless.
TFL will now undertake further assessments at the site and Merton Labour will continue to call for the full provision of a high quality toilet facilities for local residents and travellers.
